"Degrading tidal wetlands by filling, dredging, dumping of brush or debris, or blocking tidal flow is perhaps the greatest damage that individuals can inflict upon the Sound." CT Dept of Energy and Environmental Protection

If you see something that is detrimental to MI let us know. Saving Masons Island goes beyond the dock that started this page. It is about saving the Island from a handful of people who will ruin it.

The Future of Masons Island. Must See!! Here

A project has been proposed to build a huge dock at the end of Schoolhouse Rd. Over 100ft long and slips and lifts that can accommodate jets skis, a 40ft boat, and a 50ft Houseboat.

->->->The applicant is being investigated/fined by the state for violations of CT wetland protection laws at two different sites!!

Anybody who lives on Masons Island, or those who have visited, understands that it is an incredibly unique spot in New England. The spectacular water views, pristine wetlands, and the abundance of wildlife is hard to believe. Even though it is close to modern amenities, once you cross the bridge, you relax; the air, the scenic beauty and solitude make this a very special place.

Unfortunately times are changing, more houses are being built, there is more traffic, and we are faced with serious environmental challenges. As we face the prospect of climate change, our decisions regarding our environment will take on even greater importance. To date, the community has supported a reasonable balance between building and respecting the natural resources. However, there is a project underway that could change the balance drastically.

his project has the ability to profoundly affect everybody. We have very good reason to believe that one of the boats will be a Houseboat!

It will destroy the fragile ecosystem, restrict recreational use by the public, and ruin the magnificent view that the many walkers enjoy at the end of Schoolhouse rd.

It sets a an incredible Precedent
- Huge docks with hoists to store large boats and jet skis above the water may be allowed
- Docks can be built on patches of waterfront property unsuitable for houses. Owners of the docks may not even live on the island.
- Docks with elevated walkways can be built without regard for the effect on how they may affect the view.
- Houseboats for renters and parties could become the norm

The purpose of this site is to provide information about this project and Wetlands issues to interested members of the community who might otherwise not be informed until building is underway. Please inform us of any factual errors. Anybody with opposing views can submit a comment. Our Goal is to be honest, science based, and transparent.

Thanks for visiting.

This is a grassroots effort to effect a change in the way the environment in our area is managed. This dock won't be the last attempt to harm this unique place.
Business as usual is not the road to success and will only result in further degradation of what makes Masons Island so incredible.
