Next Steps

This issue is far from over. Mr. Naik has spent a great deal of money in addition to the $250,000 cash payment for the property. Despite input from friends, residents, and this site he has not significantly altered his plans. With the withdrawal of the project from the Harbor Management Commission review process, we alt least have time to continue to build our case. Now that we understand the potential for a huge boat plus a houseboat, and the fact that a houseboat is going to be berthed in Groton, it is clear that the project has the potential to affect everybody in the area.

1) Rewriting the HMC Plan - We have obtained examples of well written plans from other townships that can be used for ideas. As a group of concerned citizens we can influence the process and make sure that the new Plan protects the environment, prevents building so-called "vanity docks", and prevents a wave of houseboats. These are simple, obvious goals that everybody, except the few who want to build/buy these toys, can agree on. Anybody that would like to help out with this effort is welcome. This is an opportunity to make a difference well into the future.

2) Assess the Planning and Zoning regulations that may apply to floating houses, offices, and entertainment centers.

3) HMC alert. We will try to post an alert when projects, like the proposed dock at 28 Schoolhouse  Rd., are going to be reviewed by HMC. If possible we will inform adjacent property owners. We are not against docks, we are against the lack of transparent discussion about them. Nobody should go experience a surprise vote on a dock or similar structure; The HMC does not inform adjacent property owners, they assume the everybody reads the agenda that is posted the a day or so before the meeting. This is neither fair nor transparent.

4) Recruit environment groups who should be concerned about berthing a 1,000 square ft structure in shallow water, or allowing houseboat type vessels without adequate regulation.

5) Pressure local and state government to close the absurd loopholes that allow huge vessels to damage shallow ecosystems and allow people to excavate and fill immediately next to tidal wetlands.
